Bring Your Own Research Workshop

BYOR is a research workshop for CDSC affiliates and fellow travelers at Northwestern convened by Aaron Shaw. Participants present research-in-progress and provide feedback, accountability, and support to each other in weekly meetings. Most members of the group are affiliates of the Media, Technology & Society and Technology & Social Behavior programs at Northwestern and study online communities, collective action, organizations, collaboration, and related topics.

Get connected/involved

We currently meet every Monday 10am-11:30am in Room 2-419 of the Frances Searle Building on the Northwestern University Campus.

The best way to get information about the workshop is to email Aaron or to subscribe to our email list: byor@listserv.it.northwestern.edu by sending an email to listserv@listserv.it.northwestern.edu with "subscribe byor <full_name>" (replace "<full_name>" with your name) in the body of the message.

Format and expectations

  • If you are circulating written work, you should plan to write up a minimum of about 500 words (if you're at a very early stage of a project) to give the group something to engage with. Longer pieces are welcome too.
  • If you circulate written work, please do so no less than 1 business day prior to our meeting. (Note that this means Friday for a Monday meeting).
  • Instead of circulating written work, you can also do a presentation. If it's early stage work, you might think of this as a 5-10 minute pitch for the project. If it's something that's further along, you could do a longer presentation. No matter what, I recommend limiting presentations to an absolute maximum of 15 minutes.
  • We have short (20 minutes total) and long (45 minutes total) openings. Please sign up for one that you believe is appropriate. If you're not sure what's appropriate, you should ask.
  • Please submit any comments or written feedback by Sunday afternoon.
  • Each discussion will usually begin with an around-the-table where everyone offers one comment on the work that was circulated (after our usual around-the-table updates).

Snacks

Food restrictions the current quarter: no soy, no meat, label/warn re: sesame or nuts.

Plan on food for ~8 people and we tend to try and have at least one option that is not super sugary. The budget if you're planning on being reimbursed is $50; receipts go to Jordan Dues.
