Public Speaking (Summer 2019)/Advocacy Outline

From CommunityData

Now that you’ve spent some time thinking about your topic, you need to pencil out a basic argumentative outline. This will serve as the backbone for your speechwriting. You’ll still need to add evidence, revise the arrangement, and write it stylistically.

Requirements[edit]

You need to provide a brief breakdown of the argument to guide your writing and to allow your TA to comment on your progress. This allow us to check your argument for basic congruency. When preparing your outline, you need to avoid making your outline overly vague by not writing enough or overly specific by writing too much.

Submission[edit]

In the box below please:

  1. Identify your topic
  2. Develop a short outline that addresses the relevant stock issues.
  3. Include appropriate calls to action.

Sample[edit]

Topic:[edit]

Better regulation of antibiotics in animal farming

Ill:[edit]

  1. Food growers are unnecessarily injecting animals with antibiotics to increase profit
  2. These antibiotics decrease public food safety.

Blame:[edit]

Current antibiotic regulation are voluntary rather than mandatory.

Cure:[edit]

Pass PAMTA (Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act)

  1. PAMTA strengthens FDA regulations to mandatory (as in Europe).
  2. PAMTA comes at a minimal cost to consumers.

CTA:[edit]

  1. Sign the petition at foodpolicyaction.org to urge the passage of PAMTA.
  2. Consider supporting the non-profit Fix Food protest of Trader Joe’s to press for stocking only meat raised without antibiotics.
  3. Learn more about the issue and shop smarter. To be safe, buy organic meat. If you’re confused, check out the USDA’s “Organic 101” to understand labeling practices.
