- We will use Canvas for announcements and turning in assignments
- We will use our own Slack Channel for asynchronous 'group chat' to discuss assignments and readings, ask questions, and share information around the course material throughout the week.
- We will be doing our synchronous class meetings in Zoom. The link the Zoom channel will be placed in the Teams channel each week.

Overview and Learning Objectives
The heart of the DUB community is our diversity of perspectives, bringing together people and ideas that might otherwise be hidden in our units. We build this community in part through our plenary seminars, our retreat, and small group activities organized by members of the DUB community throughout the year. DUB seminar is one of the best and easiest ways to connect with the broader UW community.
I consider this class a 4 quarter class that lasts the whole year. Each quarter the DUB assignments and activities will change and build upon what you have learned. The first quarter of DUB, will be an opportunity for you to learn about the DUB community, practice formulating questions, and reflecting on what you have heard.
Class Expectations:
We expect that each of you will attend and participate in the weekly seminars. I have purposely made this class so that it should not take up additional time out of your busy schedules.
During the Autumn quarter we will focus on absorbing new information, reflecting on things that you heard, and formulating questions. Winter quarter’s DUB Seminar class expanded upon what we did last quarter with a focus on building and articulated our POV through one on one and large class discussions.
Class Group Discussions: You are expected to attend the two facilitated group discussion events listed below and on the calendar. 1. Thursday, Oct. 22nd from 1:00–2:20 pm PST 2. Thursday, Nov 19th from 1:00–2:20 pm PST 3. Thursday, Dec 17th from 12:30–2:20 pm (Optional - during the planned Finals exam)
Class Deliverables: 1. Formulate Questions A critical skill to build and refine is formulating questions to enhance your knowledge and understanding. “The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.” Thomas Berger, American Novelist What you turn in: For each class, write down 3 questions. 1. A follow-up question for the speaker 2. A question for the cohort to discuss 3. A question for the instructor, industry, or someone else Every question that you ask should help you gather facts or opinions. The questions should be probing and with a purpose. It is not required of you to ask the speaker any questions but it is highly encouraged. If you decide to ask your questions in class be sure to respect the speaker and ask questions that you are really interested in learning about. 2. Visual Note Linking the Presentation to Design Create a visual note from the talks that illustrate; a. how the talk fits into the design challenges that you are currently addressing or b. Highlight research methods that you can use in the context of your projects. If neither prompt aligns with the talk, then capture your key takeaway. Please do not try to visualize the whole presentation within your one visual note. Just focus on one key point. Download the template from the course Canvas site.
What to turn in: Each week create one visual note and submit it to Canvas by the end of the week. The visual note can be in pdf or any standard image format.
Group Discussion: There are two ways in which our cohort can continue the DUB dialogue. 1. After DUB Seminar Discussion I am a geek. I tend to geek out about a lot of things. I am inherently curious to know what else is happening in the world. I would love for you to geek out with me. Throughout the quarter, I have scheduled DUB discussions where we can all get together and have discussions about the various DUB topics. 2. MHCI+D DUB Cohort7 Slack Discussion Group We will be setting up a Slack group for our cohort as a place to continue our DUB Seminar Dialogue. This is a place for us to discuss the weekly presentations. Here we can talk about what inspired us, what confused us, and what bothered us. I believe that a seminar is about the dialogue so I would like to embrace that with you.
