M: Orientation, Intro Speeches

  • Preparation:

  3. Read the definition of rhetoric
  • Activities:
  1. Discuss course goals, assignments, and policies
  2. Discuss how a rhetorical approach to public speaking provides us with a set of transferable skills
  3. Everyone will perform an introductory speech
  4. Q&A about the course and instructor

W: Intro to Impromptu, Invention and Arrangement (Main Points and Support)

  • Preparation:
  1. Read the impromptu speech assignment description
  2. Watch [sample student]() impromptu speech
  3. Watch [how to effectively outline and flow]() a speech
  4. Watch [deliberately flawed]() sample impromptu speech
  5. Watch the same speech with [basic improvements]()
  6. Review [example outline]() of an impromptu speech
  • Activities:
  1. Discuss the assignment details and its rationale
  2. I will perform an impromptu speech
  3. View a number of impromptu speeches, outlining and flowing them in small groups
  4. Brainstorm potential topics in small groups and examine their merits and shortcomings
  5. Discuss the importance of main points and support
  6. Brainstorm potential main points and support as a class, then small groups, and finally in pairs
