=== Critique and Feedback Sessions ===

For the '''critique and feedback''' sessions we're expecting everybody who wants to participate to submit (a) something in writing (e.g., a paper, a [[Matsuzaki outline]], an extended abstract) and (b) a list of questions or types of feedback you want. Please only submit something you want feedback on!

If you want to participate, you need to email something to collective@communitydata.cc by the end of day on '''Monday April 6'''. Not everybody needs to participate but anybody who does participate should only submit one thing.

We're expecting that everyone attending will have read all the material submitted and will bring notes to the meeting. When we meet, everyone who has submitted something will get at least half an hour (more if possible).

When we meet, these sessions will be run with ''no presentations'' and ''no formal introductions''. The plan to just jump in and start answering the questions and talking about thing we've all already read."

These are our norms:

* '''Take the entire group as an audience''': the best feedback is beneficial or thought-provoking to the group as a whole, prompts group discussion/consideration, asks a question, etc.
* If the author is your only audience, '''be practical and actionable for the project's current stage'''. Early-stage work is expected to be a little unpolished and crunchy, and proposing a large new branch of analysis for a nearly-complete work should be approached with a scoping statement (Must this be done for the work to be valid? Or are you proposing a follow-up line of inquiry to be stated in the Future Work section?)
* '''Don't dogpile''' -- time is short, so even positive plus-ones should be brief: don't repeat what others have said, don't feel the need to chime in or pile on a critique: it is assumed that you read the paper and are supportive of the author.
* '''Avoid vaguebooking'''. "Framework needs some work" or "Lacking some flow" isn't as useful as "I don't think you're getting a lot out of using Foucault, Latour, and Habermas here, and explaining them is pretty heavy -- maybe you can get away with just invoking Benkler and moving on" and experience-grounded comments like "When you transitioned from section 2 to section 3, and half-way through section 4, I ended up flipping back to the abstract to figure out what was going on".
* '''Don't narrate the typo you found on line 156''': feedback best conveyed via a marked-up draft should be delivered via a marked-up draft.

== Who's Coming to What? ==

Please add your name below if you think that you'll be attending any of the meetup's events! Also, if you'll be traveling and/or have food requirements, make sure to fill out the [[#Accommodations|Accommodations]], [[#Dietary Restrictions|Dietary Restrictions]], and [[#Travel Plans|Travel Plans]] sections.

If you are planning on presenting during the '''critique and feedback sessions''', answer "yes" to the "'''C&F'''" box with optional details next to your name on the table below! Not everybody will present, so don't feel pressure to sign up.

'''For reference:'''
* C&F is Critique + Feedback sessions are expected to be Friday;
* Saturday will probably have flexible (co-)working sessions;
The '''Community Data Science Collective''' is an interdisciplinary research group made of up of faculty and students at the [http://www.com.washington.edu/ University of Washington Department of Communication], the [http://www.communication.northwestern.edu/departments/communicationstudies/ Northwestern University Department of Communication Studies], the [https://sils.unc.edu/ University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science], the [https://www.carleton.edu/computer-science/ Carleton College Computer Science Department], and the [https://www.cla.purdue.edu/academic/communication/ Purdue University School of Communication].

We are social scientists applying a range of quantitative and qualitative methods to the study of online communities. We seek to understand both how and why some attempts at collaborative production — like Wikipedia and Linux — build large volunteer communities and high quality work products.

Our research is particularly focused on how the design of communication and information technologies shape fundamental social outcomes with broad theoretical and practical implications — like an individual’s decision to join a community, contribute to a public good, or a group’s ability to make decisions democratically.

Our research is deeply interdisciplinary, most frequently consists of “big data” quantitative analyses, and lies at the intersection of communication, sociology, and human-computer interaction.

== Workshops and Courses ==

In addition to research, we run workshops and teach classes. Some of that work is coordinated on this wiki. A more detailed lists of workshops and teaching material on this wikis is on our [[Workshops and Classes]] page. In this page, we only list ongoing classes and workshops.

=== Public Data Science Workshops ===

'''[[Community Data Science Workshops]]''' — The Community Data Science Workshops (CDSW) are a series of workshops designed to introduce some of the basic tools of programming and analysis of data from online communities to absolute beginners. The CDSW have been held roughly twice a year since beginning in Seattle in 2014. So far, more than 100 people have volunteered their weekends to teach more than 500 people to program in Python, to build datasets from Web APIs, and to ask and answer questions using these data.
== About This Wiki==

This is open to the public and hackable by all but mostly contains information that will be useful to collective members, their collaborators, people enrolled in their projects, or people interested in building off of their work. If you're interested in making a change or creating content here, generally feel empowered to [[:w:WP:BOLD|Be Bold]]. If things don't fit, somebody who watches this wiki will be in touch.

This is mostly a normal [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki MediaWiki] although there are a few things to know:

* There's a CAPTCHA enabled. If you create an account and then contact any [[People|collective member]] with the username (on or off wiki), they can turn the CAPTCHA off for you.
* [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Math Extension:Math] is installed so you can write math here. Basically you just add math by putting TeX inside <nowiki><nowiki></nowiki> tags like this: <nowiki><math>\frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}</math></nowiki>
NHagarhttps://wiki.communitydata.science/index.php?title=CommunityData:Hyak_setup&diff=173189CommunityData:Hyak setup2019-08-10T03:47:00Z
NHagar: /* Two Factor Authentication */

== Getting a UW NetID ==

The first step will be getting a UW NetID. This process must be started by [[Benjamin Mako Hill]] who will sponsor an account for you. If you already have a UW NetID, you will skip this step. The process can work in one of three ways. One process involves an in-person sign-up and is much easier and fast. The second "remote" version will involve you FAXing a copy of your government-issued photo identification to UWIT. The third is the "deferred" process which we can use for several months until you meet in person with Mako.

In either case, this process needs to be started by Mako. Mako will then use the [https://uwnetid.washington.edu/sponsor/ Sponsored UW NetID tool].

== Access to Hyak ==

Once you have a NetID, you should contact [[Mako]] with the NetID and ask to have that NetID added to the Hyak group. This will enable your account to access the Hyak system.

== Subscribe to Hyak ==

Once your UW Net ID has been enabled for access to the Hyak system, you can be subscribed to the service. After you subscribe, it may take up to an hour for your account to be fully provisioned. To subscribe, follow the following steps.

# Go to https://uwnetid.washington.edu/manage/
# Click the "Computing Services" link on the left
# Click the "Hyak Server" and "Lolo Server" check boxes in the "Inactive Services" section.
# Click the "Subscribe >" button at the bottom of the page.
# Read the notice and click the "Finish" button.

== Two Factor Authentication ==

A two-factor token is required to login to Hyak and You will need to set up two-factor authentication with Duo.

If you are from UW, you can just go to this page: https://identity.uw.edu/2fa/

If you are not from UW, you will see a page that says "You are not eligible..." If you see this page, you need to email help@uw.edu with a subject that begins with "Hyak: " (something like "Hyak: Two factor authentication"). In the email, requrest access to a 2FA token in order to use Hyak. Be sure to mention your UW NetID and the fact that you are working with Benjamin Mako Hill <makohill@uw.edu>. UW IT will forward your request to the groups team at UW, who will then create an exception for your NetID to enroll in 2FA. Then you'll be able to access https://identity.uw.edu/2fa/ to set up 2FA with Duo.
